Feature 2: "Balanced Weight"
The TOBIRA Tamper is not bottom-heavy. That is why it feels light to hold even though it has sufficient weight for effective tamping.

Tamper Design Components
There are various styles of tampers. All of them have a hand-held "grip", a "base" with tamping face, and a "stem" to connect the grip and the base. Some tamper designs combine the grip and the stem, while other designs give the same shape to the grip and base but differ the size so the tamper can be ‘reversed’. The three components (grip, stem, base) are common to all tampers.

Tamper Balance
A tamper is designed to be held by the grip on one side of the stem in order to control the base on the other side of the stem. Therefore, a tamper is most stable and ergonomically most efficient when the center of balance exists in the stem. If the grip is too light and the base is too heavy, the tamper requires relatively more operating strength therefore tiring the barista. On the other hand, if the grip is too heavy and the base is too light, the barista needs heightened operating precision which may cause considerable irritation.

Balance is Important
Imagine that you are playing with a friend on a seesaw. If your playmate is much heavier than you, the extra effort you expend directly affects how quickly you tire. If your playmate is too light, the amount of concentration required to proactively create and control balance also directly affects how quickly you tire. To enjoy playing on a seesaw it is important that two persons have similar weight. When this lesson in mechanics is transferred to tamper design, we find that an effective tamper must balance in the middle.

Existing Tampers
Cheaper tampers are made of plastic and although they do not have a balance problem, they are simply too light. Many tampers for professional use have bases of heavy material, such as stainless steel for durability, and stems and grips of light material such as wood for easy processing. Therefore most of the existing tampers are bottom-heavy, with their centre of gravity in the base.

Trials and Errors
These stainless steel tampers, with centers of gravity situated toward the stem, have not found much favor with baristi due to their excessive overall weight. Other tampers are made entirely of aluminum. Although these too have their center of gravity near the stems and have lighter bases than stainless steel and heavier grips and stems than wood, they look cheap and have less endurance than other designs.

The TOBIRA Tamper Solution
The TOBIRA Tamper provides a breakthrough in tamper design. It is so well designed that the center of gravity exists in the stem, while the overall weight is similar to that of existing popular tampers. It is not too heavy, not bottom-heavy, and can be balanced on your finger.

Conclusion
If the weight of your tamper is optimal and is well-balanced, no excess use of force is necessary and precision control is easy. This improves the all-round quality of your work. The TOBIRA Tamper ensures your tamping is efficient and physically stress-free.
