The number of espresso enthusiasts in Japan has been rapidly increasing since the appearance of Seattle-style coffee shops in the mid 1990's. There are more than one hundred private Japanese websites specializing on espresso. In May 2003, "Espresso no Tobira" , the pioneer of private Japanese espresso websites, produced a new brand of espresso tamper; the "TOBIRA Tamper". (TOBIRA is pronounced Toh-BEE-Rah in Japanese).

The meaning of TOBIRA
Although TOBIRA means DOOR in Japanese, the "TOBIRA Tamper" does not get its name because it resembles a door knob! The Japanese website "Espresso no Tobira", which literally means "Door to Espresso", was launched in May 2000 by an espresso enthusiast. While the initial aim was to provide beginners information on the enjoyment of espresso, the website now attracts beginners and enthusiasts alike who visit to exchange information and views.
The TOBIRA Tamper is designed to provide easy and steady tamping for everyone, whether amateur or professional, who is not satisfied with existing tampers. It literally "opens the door" to the enjoyment of espresso.
